Radiological Worker II Initial Training:
Course 020001
Note: College credit from Columbia Basin College may be obtained upon satisfactory completion of this course.
Course Summary: The Radiological Worker II Initial Training course is designed for personnel needing unescorted access to radiological areas that require personal protective clothing and access to high radiation areas.. This initial training requires students to meet specific performance requirements. Retrain frequency is 2 years. The core and site-specific lessons include the following:

Radiological Fundamentals

Biological Effects

Radiation Limits

As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) Program

Personnel Monitoring Programs

Radiological Postings and Controls

Radiological Emergencies

Radioactive Contamination Control

High and very high radiation areas

Self-Survey
The following practical factor elements are included:
:

Donning and doffing protective clothing

Entering a simulated radiological buffer area, contamination area, and high radiation area

Responding to simulated abnormal situations

Responding to simulated alarms or faulty radiological control equipment

Removing protective clothing and equipment and exiting the simulated area

Performing a self-survey for personnel contamination

Verifying instrument response
While standardized academic training is designed for the classroom setting, alternatives settings may be used. Knowledge objectives provide the basis for skills/tasks to be performed in practical factors training, using hands-on training to demonstrate mastery of the ALARA principles, contamination control techniques, and responses to abnormal conditions. Personnel and facilities are not placed at unnecessary risk.
Target Audience: General employee in all disciplines. Reading and understanding English is necessary. Students must meet physical requirements to use personal protective equipment.
Course Prerequisites: There are no course prerequisites.
Course Evaluation: An examination and a practical evaluation are used to measure whether a student has met the training objectives.
A student must attain a score of 80 percent or higher on the written examination and a satisfactory score for the practical evaluation. Students must demonstrate proficiency on all practical factors.
Course Length: 24 hours
Course Frequency: 2 times each month and upon request
