Course Summary: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Radiological Control Technician (RCT) Fundamentals Academics course provides the RCT academic fundamentals such as math, physics, and nuclear physics. The course retrain frequency is 24 months. The course content includes the following topics:

Math and algebra

Unit analysis

Physical science

Nuclear physics

Sources of radiation

Radioactivity and radioactive decay

Interaction of radiation with matter

Biological effects of radiation

Radiological protection standards

As Low As Reasonably Achievable

External exposure control

Internal exposure control

Radiation detector theory
Target Audience: This course is intended for the RCT candidates and first-line radiological control manager with previous education and/ or experience.
Education Prerequisites: High school education or equivalent, one year of school algebra and physical science.
Course Prerequisites: There are no course prerequisites.
Course Evaluation: Examinations will be used to measure student mastery of the knowledge and skills, as identified by learning objectives, necessary to perform satisfactorily on the job. A score of 80 percent or higher on written examinations is necessary to receive course credit.
Course Length: Time will adjust upward to 180-200 hours for audience with no previous experience or education prerequisites.L
